It was a game of two halves as West left Stafford with a point last weekend. Slipping behind to an early Brocton goal, and with the deficit doubled before the break, a second half display featuring a Sam Dickov brace ensured the points were shared.
Ahead of midweek fixtures across the league, it means we enter a game out of the playoff spots for the first time in over a month. The visit of Whitchurch Alport gives Lee Rick's side the opportunity to enter back into the top 5.
Alport's weekend similarly ended with spoils shared, drawing with Romulus. A five game spell of consecutive losses is currently the defining moment of the nascent season, though outside of that they've had some impressive results: an opening day win at AFC Wolverhampton City, a goalless draw at home to Northwich Victoria, and a 3-1 victory at Uttoxeter Town. The latter was the start of the three game undefeated run they're currently on.
Whitchurch Alport came into existence for the season immediately following the Second World War, and took their name from Alport Farm - the home of local footballer Coley Maddox, who lost his life in the conflict. A few years later they were founder members of the Mid-Cheshire League, flitting around its divisions from 1948 until 2012. At that point the club were at a crossroads, and almost folded before carrying on in the Mercian League - then successfully applying to join the North West Counties Football League for the start of the 2015/16 season.
We've met Alport twice before, beating them home and away in what was largely a campaign to forget in 2018/19. A goal from Joe Shaw and Ashley Leather's first two goals for the club sealed a 3-1 win at Brookburn Road in August under the tutelage of Steve Settle. Later, as new manager David Powell unsuccessfully attempted to fight relegation, Gibraltar international Jamie Coombes opened the scoring before a rare Lee Gavin effort gave us a 2-0 away victory. They were two of only ten wins that season as we were relegated from the NWCFL Premier Division.
In terms of silverware, the most eye-catching trophy in their cabinet is the 1974 Welsh Amateur Cup - now known as the FAW Welsh Trophy. Open to some teams from outside the borders of Wales, Whitchurch's triumph is one of only 9 times an English side has won the tournament in its 136 year history. They defeated Cardiff College of Education 3-1 in the final, and finished as runners up on two other occasions (losing 2-0 to Chirk AAA in 1958/59, and 4-1 to Welshpool in 1976/77).
This season is their sixth in the Midland Football League since being laterally moved post-COVID. Their best finish was 6th the season before last, but they sank to 11th last time out. They'll be looking to be back in the upper reaches of the table once again come May.

If you are driving to the match, please use our car park at Hardy Farm M21 8DP or alternatively the car park opposite the Bowling Green pub M21 9ES.
Please note that there is NO PARKING allowed in the Chorltonville area adjacent to the ground, which is private.
