After almost a month away from league action, Sunday sends West out on the road to the Wirral, with a trip to face bottom-of-the-table Poulton Vics.
Though it may feel in the distant past, we travel in decent league form on the back of wins over FC United and Tranmere. Results elsewhere since we last played mean we've been moved down to sixth.
Our most recent competitive fixture was in the Women's FA Cup, a 7-2 exit to Mancunian Unity. Poulton Vics similarly suffered at the same stage, losing 6-0 against Salford City. With the rest of the league in cup action, ours is the only NWWRL game being played this weekend, and a win would move us up to third.
It has been a hard season so far for our hosts. Poulton sit bottom of the NWWRL Premier Division, a single win from their opening seven games leaving them on three points. Recent weeks have offered little relief, a 3-1 defeat at Nantwich Town followed by a 2-0 loss to Bury, while their goal difference still carries the scars of an opening-day 8-2 reverse at the hands of FC United.
Originally known as Upton Town Ladies, they became part of the Poulton Victoria set-up in the middle of COVID lockdowns. 2024/25 saw Vics win the NWWRL Division One South title, and they've grown to have a thriving youth set-up, with girls' teams across various age groups.
Last season's equivalent fixture was an action packed affair that somehow only ended in a 1-0 win. Naomi Lawrence scored on the half-hour mark to send the West travelling faithful home happy. It was a tough campaign overall for Vics, who finished second bottom in their debut season at NWWRL Premier level. With almost a third of the season gone, they'll be aiming to kickstart another escape from the drop this Sunday.

Getting to Poulton Vics
From Manchester, trains run from Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria to Liverpool Lime Street, taking around 45 minutes to an hour. From Lime Street, take a Merseyrail Wirral Line train (towards New Brighton or West Kirby) to Birkenhead North, which takes around 15 minutes. The ground is roughly a 20 minute walk from Birkenhead North station.
