History repeated itself last Sunday, as West Women went to Poulton Vics and clung on to an early lead to take home all three points. Bottom placed Vics have only picked up points once this season, but showed little sign of such a poor run of form as they took us to the wire. A Zoe Anderson goal was enough to clinch it for West, as she capitalised on a spilled Ellie Caddick free-kick to slot home from early range after 10 minutes and take up back up to third in the table.
This Sunday sees West back at Brookburn Road for the first of consecutive home games, with fourth-placed Bury the visitors.
The Shakers have been one of the division's form sides so far, losing just twice in their opening seven league games. Only unbeaten leaders Bolton Wanderers can better their goal difference of +15, and they head to Chorlton having already beaten our last opponents Poulton Vics 2-0 earlier in the campaign. The spent the weekend playing in the Women's FA Cup Third Qualifying Round, hosting North East Regional Womens Football League side i2i International Soccer Academy. Two down at the break, i2i added a third in the second period to end Bury's cup dreams for another season.
Founded in 1996, Bury's women's side have lived through a turbulent few years alongside their parent club. When Bury FC men's team were expelled from the Football League in 2019, the women's team were forced out of Gigg Lane, relocating to Goshen Sports Centre. They returned home in April 2022, marking their first game back at Gigg Lane in three years with a 3-0 win over Fleetwood Town Wrens in front of around 500 supporters.
Recent meetings between the sides have gone both ways. In April 2025, the points were shared at Brookburn Road, Bury equalising ten minutes into the second half to cancel out our first half opener. Last season's league meeting in Chorlton went firmly the visitors' way, a Georgia Payton brace helping Bury to a 4-1 win. West got revenge in emphatic style three weeks later, scoring four second half goals in a 5-0 win at Gigg Lane in the first round of the Alliance Design and Print Cup. The final word went to Bury though, a 2-0 win at Gigg Lane in March completing the league double over us.
With any kind of promotion bid for either side dependent on Bolton Wanderers ending their 100% league record soon, pole position in the chasing pack is currently the prize at stake. Only six points currently separate 2nd from 7th. The league is fast approaching the halfway point, and neither team will want to lose ground.
