Match Report | West 7 - 2 Mossley Hill
League Cup sponsored by Macron, Sunday 1st November
We made our long-awaited return to the Macron Cup on Sunday, as we overcame a struggling Mossley Hill Athletic side in a 7-2 win at Brookburn Road.
It was a game of two halves, with the visitors running us close in the first 45 – and threatening early in the second – before we eventually pulled away and eased into the next round.
This marked our first game in the competition since our semi-final exit to Mancunian Unity last season, and we welcomed a Mossley Hill side who are currently bottom of Tier 6, in the same division as our Reserves, who beat them 2-0 back in August.
We started strongly and could well have led inside the first few minutes, when Rachel Mason volleyed over from a corner.
We didn’t have to wait too long, however, before Ava Bushell opened the scoring with her first of the afternoon, latching onto a wonderful Shenton through-ball, and rounding the keeper to roll home.
The assister turned scorer just minutes later, getting on the end of a Bracegirdle low cross and firing home off the bar. The first half continued in much the same vein, before the visitors halved the deficit in injury time, when Mason slipped and gave Mossley Hill the chance to score.
Bushell restored the two-goal lead just after the break, another good finish after being found by substitute Wilson and placing a low shot past the goalkeeper, in front of the clubhouse.
Another error moments later allowed the visitors to cut the deficit again from a tight angle, setting up a nervy ten minutes, which was finally put to rest when Shenton curled a spectacular free-kick over the wall to make it 4-2, her second of the game.
We put the game out of sight with a flurry of goals inside six minutes just before the end, Bushell getting her hat-trick after capitalising on a loose ball from the goalkeeper and scoring into an empty net, before Milla Jacobson got her first two goals for the club, the first through the goalkeeper’s hands, and the second a mazy run and fabulous finish from long-range, to put the game beyond doubt.
We go into the hat for the next round, due to be drawn in December.
