It was a Bank Holiday to remember for West, with a 3-0 win against a high-flying FC United side.
We looked to be heading to the break level before an opportunistic Eva Bushell nicked the ball from the toes of the FC United goalkeeper to put us one up. Club stalwart Ellie Caddick put her body on the line to double the lead in the second half - so much so that she required an immediate substitution afterwards. Luci Lamberti then added some gloss to make it 3-0 in the 91st minute, opening her West account with a rifled effort from close range.
The result meant we're in the lofty position of 3rd in the North West Women's Regional League - asymmetric games played mean it may only be a temporary position, but for the moment it is one to savour.
Sunday's hosts Crewe Alexandra may currently be 5 places below West, but such is the crowded nature of mid-table that there are only three points between the sides.
A Crewe side first appeared in the North West Women's Regional League as far back as 1985 -though the club has been through more than one reincarnation since. The current version's roots lay in the 2000 formation of Crewe Vagrants, taking on their current name 5 years later.
They currently call Crewe Alexandra Soccer Centre in Shavington their home, and have pedigree around this level of the game. NWWRL Premier Division champions in 2015/16, they also have won three Cheshire FA Cups in a row, and, going back to 2006/07, had a spell as high as the third tier of the pyramid.
The club can also lay a claim to footballing royalty: 44 goal England striker Kerry Davis, started her career with Alex. Leaving in 1985 for a four year spell in Italy where she turned out for Lazio, Trani 80, and Napoli. Davis returned to England for a second spell at Crewe before being lured to Liverpool, ending her career at Croydon Women, winning a league and cup double in 1996.
She became England's first black woman international in 1982 while an Alex player, and also featured in in 1984 European Championships, converting her penalty in an ultimately unsuccessful shootout as England lost a two legged final against Sweden. She would also play at Euro 1987, World Cup 1995, and Euro 95. She played her final international game in 1998, and retired as England's all-time highest scorer - a record she held until 2012, and she still sits third overall.
In 2022 Davis was inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame, and was awarded an MBE in the 2026 New Year Honours list.
We have played Crewe regularly over the last decade, with a record that sits at 4 wins, 2 draws, and 6 losses. Last season brought a 2-0 defeat away, but Louise Ainscow and a Naomi Lawrence double avenged that loss with a 3-1 win at Brookburn Road. A repeat of that scoreline would be welcomed as we look to become established in the top half of the table.
