West return to Brookburn Road for the first of two consecutive home games for the men's team, with the visit of Dudley Town brought forward to this Saturday, 22nd August

We were made to go through the gears against Stone Old Alleynians on Saturday, leaving Newcastle-under-Lyme Velodrome with our first three points of the season. Falling behind to a second half set-piece forced Joe Berks into a solo breakaway to level the scores, before Sam Dickov wheeled away from his man to hammer home the winner. Lee Rick's side were made to ride their luck with Alleynians missing a golden opportunity to level the scores late on - but a 2-1 win was much needed result that puts us part of the mid-table peloton.

Our guests for this latest midweek fixture at Brookburn Road are Stockport Georgians, in what could pass as a local derby in the Midland Football League - though it would be a stretch to call it a rivalry. Despite our geographic proximity, this will mark the first competitive fixture between the two sides in the football pyramid.

After absorbing Adswood Amateurs in 1987, the club spent the following decades in the local leagues, winning the Manchester League Premier Division title three times (1987/88, 2001/02, and 2014/15) before applying to join the pyramid for the start of 2022/23.

Their first few seasons in the North West Counties League Division One South resulted in 9th, 14th, and 8th placed finishes respectively, before sealing 4th place and a successful playoff campaign in 2025/26. Georgians saw off New Mills 1-0 in the semi-final before eventually defeating Eccleshall on penalties in the final - impressively, both ties were away from home.

The Woodsmoor-based side spent the weekend taking part in the FA Vase, where they defeated Penistone Church of the NCEL Premier 2-1 at Cromley Road. Like West, they were laterally moved at the start of this campaign, and will come to Brookburn with a 100% Midland Football League record, winning 4-1 away at Tividale before raising a few eyebrows by turning Wythenshawe Town over 3-2. They’ve also had their first ever FA Cup fixture, losing 3-2 to Nelson.

Their top scorer, Lucas Berry, has already netted five in two league appearances (seven in four overall), with a hat-trick at Tividale reported to be one of the standout performances of the fledgling Midland season.

There has been one recent friendly between West and Georgians. Under the management of Paul Marshall, we visited their Cromley Road ground in July 2024, comfortably running out 4-1 winners. Lewis Billingsley netted twice, with Jordan Lazenbury adding another, and Victor Abadaki giving the first hint to his talents - causing chaos in the box then rounding the keeper to close out the scoring.
