Following our 3-0 home defeat at the hands of top of the table Winsford United, we head to Lye Town aiming to pick up three points on the road.
Winsford came to Brookburn Road having won 7 out of 8 in the league, and carried on that fine run of form with a second-half display that was too much for Lee Rick's side. After an evenly matched, if uneventful, first half, the Yellows made their quality show after the break: striker Jordan Johnson twice leaving goalkeeper Bayleigh Passant no chance when left with time to shoot from range, before an 85th minute lob on the break put some gloss on the scoreline.
With the rest of the division playing in cup competitions, West still sit in 3rd - though having played more games than a number of teams below us. Lye Town, currently in 15th, have played five league games to our nine, and come into this fixture on a high, triumphing on penalties in the FA Vase Second Qualifying Round against Birmingham OJM.
Lye Town started the Midland League season with back to back losses, but their form has since picked up, beating Brocton 4-2 and Stone Old Alleynians 2-0 either side of being pipped 3-2 by Cheadle Town. A quirk of the fixture list means that this game will be their first home league match of the season to date, each of their other five taking place on the road.
Even so, there have been plenty of home comforts for the Flyers, with Stone Old Alleynians, Sporting Khalsa, Lichfield City, and the previously mentioned Birmingham OJM all being knocked out of cup competitions at The Sports Ground so far this campaign. Only Racing Club Warwick of the seventh tier have bettered them on home soil so far, a 5-1 loss ending Lye's FA Cup dreams in the 1st Qualifying Round. In midweek, they added another cup win: a 3-0 away win over MFL side AFC Wolverhampton City in the BCFA Senior Challenge Cup
Founded in 1930, Lye Town have been remarkably consistent at similar levels of non-league football: records have them spending almost 50 years in the West Midlands Premier Division - precursor to the current Midland Football League - with that run only broken by the formation of the latter. They earned promotion to the Northern League Division One Midlands with a second-placed finish in 2022/23, but only lasted two seasons before being relegated. Their 2025/26 campaign was one of consolidation, finishing 9th out of 18.
Lye Town's home, The Sports Ground, is aptly named: in addition to non-league football, the venue also hosts local cricket teams. The pitch encompasses part of the outfield, with barriers taken down to allow batters to drive to deep square leg, or be caught out at deep cover. Lee Rick will, of course, be hoping that this doesn't prove to be a sticky wicket for his side.
