For the first time in West Women's season we divert our attention away from the North West Women's Regional League - though only to welcome a fellow member of the division in the Women's FA Cup Second Round Qualifying.

Mancunian Unity are a comparatively young club, formed in the summer of 2019. After starting out in the Greater Manchester Women's Football League, they won league titles in 2021/22 and 2022/23, then took the North West Women's Regional League North title in 2023/24 to reach the Premier Division, and now sit amongst the favourites to challenge for the title.

Perhaps the most notable moments in their brief existences have come in the Women's FA Cup. In 2024/25 they made headlines by reaching the third round proper, defeating Wigan Athletic, Leeds United, Stockport County and Handsworth before Rugby Borough were too much for them. Last season, they reached that same stage again, with Curzon Ashton, Barnsley, i2i International, and Durham Cestria vanquished before Hull City brought the run to a close.

West's own FA Cup history is to be proud of too - our deepest run came in 2023/24, when a 2-1 win over Hindley Juniors and a 5-1 victory against Redcar Town set up the visit of Leeds United. A crowd of 470 saw a spirited performance, with West leading 2-1 after 48 minutes - though United eventually triumphed 6-2. At this stage last season, we defeated Morecambe 8-1, before exiting in the next round away at York City.

Mancunian Unity have already visited Brookburn Road once this season, taking all three points on the opening day of the season with a 1-0 win. They've since played five league games, winning four and drawing one, and are currently second in the table overall. Bolton Wanderers, with a 100% record, the only team ahead of them.

We approach this weekend's tie following a tough test away at Tranmere Rovers. Two Beth Wilson goals in the first half were enough to secure all three points, with the hosts managing to pull one back during the second period before a late - and ultimately fruitless - push for an equaliser. The result was enough to see us head back up to third in the league table.

We spoke to manager Ieuan Evans in the lead up to the game - watch that now below.
